MPX G2 Q&A

- Is there any way to change programs/ a/b or turn off effects thru a foot switch on the g2? even if it only one program then back to the previous. I do have the R1 controler but it does not work well, and I rather not lug it around anyway.

You can do all of these things. To set the G2 footswitchs to increment/decrement program go to the SYSTEM/MIDI/Pgm Change parameter and press OPTION. This is actually a little sub menu that contains Prm# Offset, Pgm+ and Pgm-. You select which parameter to edit by pressing the > and < buttons. The Pgm+ and Pgm- parameters allow you to define something to increment and decrement the current program. Just select Tog1-2 or Sw1-3 for these parameters (depending on if you have a toggle or momentary footswitch) and you're good to go (see section 5-7 of the manual for details). You can also use Program Chains to string groups of programs together to step through. Normally it would step through all of the programs in the system but using Chains you can create a sub set. Check the manual for details.

To map the footswitches to toggle effects on/off, go to the SYSTEM/Bypass Patches menu. From here you can select which control source toggles and effects on and off.

To toggle A/B from the footswitch, go to the EDIT/Controllers/A/B menu, OnSrc parameter. This defines which parameter triggers an A/B change.

- I want to set a user preset and have all effects bypassed, so it's hardwired from input to output. Can I save a preset like that without hitting the bypass button?

The programs in the G2 are stored with the current bypass state so if you bypass a program and store it, when it's loaded it will be bypassed. I'm not 100% sure about the "hardwired" bypass. We did add a relay to the G2 for bypass but I'm not sure if it works from the input to the main output or only to the Send. You'll have to check the manual.

- I'm getting about almost a second delay from when I hit the button on the R1 to when the SOUNDS change on the G2. The NUMBER on the G2 changes at the exact same time as the R1 but there is a lag as to when the display flashes and the sound (preset) changes.

The MPX G2 does NOT load programs instantly. There is a delay which varies depending on what effects are loaded. 1 second seems a bit long to me but as I said in my previous mail, if you think yours is slower than someone else, copy a particular program from their system into yours via MIDI (MIDI out on theirs to MIDI in on yours), store it and check the load time on yours compared to theirs.

Either way, I don't think there is much that can be done to speed it up (unless your G2 is actually defective, which is unlikely). The only thing I can recommend is to make sure your programs only contain effects you are using. Each effect that is added to a program increases the load time. Try creating a program with only one tiny effect and see how quickly it loads. Things like the intellegent pitch shifter take a long time to load so don't include them in your preset unless you need them.

I tend to creat programs that contain everything I'll need for a particular song so I'm not doing a lot of changin during a song. Toggleing the bypass on a particular effect is instantanious so I create effects with lots of stuff in them and just bypass/unbypass the particular effects as needed. Because they are on the large size, they load slower but contain multiple effects so I don't have to change often. If there is a place in a tune where you need a quick change, try to create an effect that contains both sounds and just effect bypass through the change.

- I want my customized patches on the G2 to change parameters on an Electric WarpFactory via MIDI control changes, so the MPX G2 can set up the vocoder to preselected settings with each patch change. Can you tell me whether or not this is possible?

The MPX G2 is not capable of sending out extra control or program change messages.

If you use the G2 with the MPX R1 however, you are in luck. The R1 has an operating mode where it can send out a series of MIDI messages when it's program select footswitches are pressed.

- Any idea how to get a clean boost after the preamp section in the G2. I just need like a 4 db boost for solos with no additional gain.

The easiest place to do it is with the Post Level parameter: press EDIT, EDIT, EDIT (makes sure you're at the top of Edit menu), press > to get into the Mix menu, and > twice again to get to the Post Level parameter. That sets the overall level of the program and gives you up to +6dB of boost. Thats also a good parameter to create patches to for boost and/or master volume.

If you need boost at a pariticular place in the effect order, try one of the Volume (M) or Volume (S) effects in Chorus or some other block you aren't using. The level parameter will give you another 6dB of boost.

- If I want to sync the JamMan up to a an external clock of a drum machine--I am able to get the JamMan sync to the number of beats that the drum machine is playing ---if I set Temp Beat Value to 8 the JamMan stops after 8 beats. My question is can I trigger the record function of the JamMan to start when I start the drum machine, or do I have to start the drum machine, wait until the first beat, and then press the tap button to start recording?

It's been a while since I looked at the G2 software but I don't remember any way to start recording a Jamman loop from the MIDI System Common "Start" message which is usually output from a drum machine when it starts.

What I would recommend doing is adding a count to the beginning of the sequence then add a Tap command to the first beat of the first measure containing real music. You could also try skipping the count and just adding the Tap command at the beginning of the sequence. I've only done this with a real JamMan but it should work with no problem.

There are actually several ways of sending a Tap command to the G2 via MIDI. Probably the best way is to send Continuous Controller #119 to it. This controller number is hardwired in the G2 but is also the one used by the MPX R1 remote. The most important thing though, is that I believe that controller gets reponded to more quickly than others so the loop will be more accurate. I don't believe the actual value of the controller makes any difference but it probably wouldn't hurt to set the value to 127.

You can also map any controller you like to Tap from the EDIT : Tempo menu's "Tap Source" parameter. I haven't done any tests on it but I believe the response from the hardwired controller is a little better.

The final way of sending a Tap command via MIDI is via Program Change messages. I received a lot a flack on the Loopers Delight group for using Program Change messages on the JamMan for control of the box rather than program selection but for simpler MIDI controllers (and even some of the better ones), it is the only way to control a JamMan. Originally the MPX G2 didn't have this capability, but towards the end of the project I realized that this was indeed a big hole in the implementation. In the end, I managed to add it in using MIDI Maps.

There is a good descriptions of MIDI Maps for the MPX G2 on my home page (www.BobSellon.com) under "Gear" so I won't go into it here but to summarize, the MIDI Maps allow you to map any program change number to any program in the box.. My addition to the MIDI Maps also allows you to trigger some of the most common JamMan functions via program change messages. Using MIDI Maps, I'm able to set up my MPX R1 remote so that, on a particular bank of programs, the top 5 buttons select G2 programs and the bottom buttons control the JamMan features (Layer, Replace, Delay, Start/Stop, Reset). Very powerful. I'm going to be adding a page to the G2 section of my home page on this soon.

I seem to remember one of the extra controls on the MIDI Maps being broken. It was either the Tap or the Bypass so it might be best to start with the other commands first.
