WebMIDI Recorder

Stec Records WebMIDI Record icon 4/10/2025 This article contains information about my free online WebMIDI Recorder app that allows you to quickly record music you play on a keyboard as MIDI notes into MIDI files (.mid) that can be later edited when opened in a full blown audio recording application such as Cakewalk or Protools. The objective here is to capture a performance as painlessly as possible so as to not interrupt the artistic flow.

The panel includes a log showing the incoming MIDI data in a data grid along with a set of piano keys that turn red when a MIDI note arrives, a piano-roll viewer that shows the incoming data as red bars that move from right to left and a metronome.

The process is pretty simple:

  1. Connect your keyboard to your computer/phone/touchpad. This is usually a USB connection but can also be via a conventional 5 pin MIDI cable if a MIDI Input connection is available on an audio interface you are using.
  2. Click the "Enable MIDI" button on the WebMIDI Recorder panel
  3. Play your keyboard (your performance)
  4. Click the "Save" button. This opens a Midi File box that lets you specify a file name and a name for the track you are creating. The default is "Piano".
  5. Click the save icon and select a location to save your new MIDI file. This will typically be where you save your audio recordings.

To create another recording, click the "Clear" button and click "Save" when you want to save it to a file; the recording starts immediately.
